A New Service Available to the Pubic

The average person comes in contact with over a 100 hazardous chemicals each day – many of them in common household products. ToxicFreeTips offers a toll-free phone line, website, printed materials, and an email option to help the public handle hazardous household products safely and chose safer alternatives.

 

ToxicFreeTips, sponsored by the Department of Ecology (Ecology), can help you:

·         Find your way through the maze of chemical and product information.

·         Reduce the risk of asthma and other illnesses.

·         Locate responsible disposal sites and recyclers for hazardous products.

 

To have a less-toxic home and planet, Ecology encourages households to:

 

Shop smart:

·         Read labels and avoid products labeled “danger” or poison.”

·         Look for these certifications:  Green Seal or EPA’s Design for the Environment.

  

Use products with care:

·         Open windows and turn on fans when using strong cleaners.

·         Store hazardous products away from children and pets.

·         Call (800) 222-1222 for free Mr. Yuk stickers.

 

Dispose of products safely:

·         Keep hazardous products off the ground, out of storm drains and waterways.

·         Call ToxicFreeTips or your local garbage utility, or visit www.1800recycle.wa.gov for advice.
